How does it work?
CaviKey uses patented Impairment Detection Technology® to quickly screen the driver for any signs of impairment. Once your fingerprint is scanned and recognized by the system, you’re then screened for sobriety. All you have to do is recall and perform a unique sequence of tasks.
Just a simple sequence, such as fastening your seatbelt, turning the heat on and off, tapping the brake, locking the doors, etc. Easy to do when you’re sober, but virtually impossible to complete within your historical time when impaired.
How do I get set up as a driver?
When you first receive your vehicle with the device installed, simply start the car as you normally have in the past. Once running, place your fingerprint on the biometric scanner. Do this three times, and you’re now a registered user. Then each time after, you’ll log into the system via your fingerprint and perform the quick user sequence before you start the vehicle.
Am I the only one who will be able to drive my vehicle?
Of course not! Once you log yourself (and your fingerprint) into the system and start the vehicle, you can then log other people into your CaviKey System with just three reads of their fingertip. Just three touches and they’re good to go.
This fingerprint scan offers a higher level of security for you. It makes sure you control who gets behind the wheel of your vehicle. It’s also a powerful anti-theft device using biometric scan technology. Depending upon the model chosen, the CaviKey System can hold up to 60 fingerprints.
How long does it take to engage the CaviKey System to start the vehicle?
In just a few seconds, you’re free to go. While breath check systems take up to two minutes to work, the entire CaviKey process typically takes 10 seconds or less.
What if I forget my screening sequence?
No problem. We give you a cheat sheet that illustrates your sequence. You can keep it in your vehicle as a reference.
What happens if I fail the screening process?
What then?
You get three tries to perform your screening sequence successfully. After the third consecutive failed attempt, you’re locked out of the system for two hours

IMPORTANT NOTE: Even if you’re locked out, another registered driver can still start and drive your vehicle for you. After two hours, you get another three tries. |

What we have discovered, is that when a person consistently gets locked out of the system, or chooses to no longer drive their CaviKey vehicle, it typically serves as a “red flag” that the person in recovery may need addition help or treatment. More often than not, it means they have relapsed.
Does everybody have to be screened, or can some drive without performing the sequence?
Each person has to log in with their fingertip. Depending on the way your CaviKey model is configured, additional drivers may or may not have to complete the screening sequence.
How is this different from a breathalyzer?
A breathalyzer-type system measures the blood alcohol levels of the driver, sometimes with questionable results. The CaviKey System identifies adverse changes in the person’s motor, cognitive, and memory skills, and protects them from driving. It’s a more comprehensive approach to detect all types of impairment – not just those caused by alcohol.
How can it tell if I’m drunk if I don’t blow into any device?
You don’t need a rubber hose to blow into to know that alcohol use directly affects your brain. Even small amounts cause changes to your motor skills, vision, and judgment. The average sober person has full control over all of these areas, while someone “under the influence” will show a detectable lack of control. The CaviKey System identifies adverse changes in the person’s motor, cognitive, and memory skills, and protects them from driving.
CaviKey’s® patented technology not only knows who you are, but it knows how long it takes you to do your sequence when you’re sober. Each screening sequence is picked up by special vehicle sensors and is recorded and then monitored by the system. CaviKey gets to know you, and how you do things. So when you’re impaired for any reason, the system checks your current response time against your history. Highly advanced computer algorithms evaluate the screening sequence to ensure you’re sober, and you’re cleared to drive.
Is it worth the expense?
That depends… what’s it worth to you to stay sober? What price can you put on your family’s peace of mind, so they don’t have to worry about you having a relapse and hurting yourself and/or others? What would you be willing to pay to get them to stop nagging you or questioning your recovery?
Just one DUI (drugs or alcohol) arrest can cost you more than $13,000 or even worse, jail time. Not to mention the shame and embarrassment. CaviKey costs far less than that – and it protects your freedom on your road to recovery.
Who installs the system, and how do they know what to do?
CaviKey Systems can be installed by most professional auto repair facilities with expertise in vehicle controls and electronics. Look for the blue ASE seal, or check with your car dealer for recommendations. Installation instructions are easy-to-follow and are included with each CaviKey System purchased. We also offer a special website with tips and advice, as well as a toll-free service hotline to answer any questions that may come up along the way.
Does the system violate my vehicle manufacturer’s warrantees?
Like many aftermarket accessories, a CaviKey System typically does not violate traditional manufacturer warrantees. That said, be sure to check with your vehicle manufacturer for details specific to ignition interlock devices.
What maintenance does the CaviKey System require?
Unlike a breathalyzers, the CaviKey System requires no additional servicing, or ongoing maintenance or re-calibrations. We have designed the CaviKey System to not only be easy to use, but easy to own as well.
What if I sell my car?
If you decide to sell your car, you could have the system professionally removed from your vehicle and installed on your new vehicle. Instructions are included in the installation manual. Just be sure the work is performed by a qualified vehicle technician. Or, you also could offer CaviKey as a biometric security device which adds value to your vehicle. Software can be obtained through CaviKey Systems that will easily walk you through clearing the system for the new owners. |
